Nursing School will not defeat me!!
Congratulations! You got into nursing school. Go out and celebrate your achievement with all your family and friends. You deserve it, after all you spent all those hours in prereq courses, applied to a dozen programs and suffered through all those endless application essays and interviews.
Nursing school is not for the faint of heart. It is a very stressful and at the same time a very exciting period of your life. There will be days when you question your sanity and other days that will move and inspire you. Nursing students are in a constant state of information over load. So much information is crammed into your brain that you think it might explode ( don't worry, it won't).
Before you know it your first day of clinicals arrive. The butterflies of anxiety and excitement arrive as well. This is what you have been waiting for. This is what being a nurse is all about. Saving lives, comforting the sick and ...wait, what,... emptying bed pans?? That patient in 205B just threw up all over. Ugh!! What's that smell? Mr. Smith's colostomy bag just exploded.
After a day in clinical rounds it's nice to go home and have dinner with the family and discuss how everyone's day went. However they have banned you from discussing your day while in clinical, after having described the smell of Pseudomonas, and the color of naso-gastric content while they ate. Bon Appetit indeed.
You made it through the lectures, labs sessions, the endless study groups, clinicals, care plans and gallons of coffee. Finally you receive your nursing pin and take the Nightingale oath. This is what you worked hard for. You have joined the ranks of generations of men and women devoted to caring for the sick and injured. You should indeed be proud of what you have accomplished and what you represent. Not everyone can be a nurse.
